Quetzal Guerrero brings a fusion of Latin, soul, jazz and funk to the world of music with his latest album, "Coiza Boa".

With Latin music still not at the pinnacle, in terms of popularity, of the American and British music scenes, we look to artists such as Enrique Iglesias and Shakira to break down the boundaries between music cultures. These artists take the Latin flavour and mix it with an American/British essence to create music that appeals to all cultures and tastes – cue the entrance of Quetzal Guerrero, Brazilian musician and artistic prodigy.

The Man Behind the Music

At the tender age of four, with musical talent already surging through his veins, Quetzal Guerrero found a love for the humble violin.

Enchanted by its sound and possessing natural ability, Quetzal was soon enrolled at the famous Suzuki National Institute in Matsumoto, Japan, where he was taught to play the violin using the Suzuki method.

He went on to master the art of violin playing. So great was his talent that, at the age of ten, he was invited on stage to accompany the great Tito Puente – the 'King of Latin music' , renowned for hits such as 'Oye Como Va'.

Being classically trained in the violin wasn’t enough for Quetzal. So clear was his vision of his future musical sound - the perfect blend he wanted to create - that he went on to learn to play other percussion instruments, even teaching himself how to play the guitar, and adding to his growing repertoire of talents. This gave him the advantage of being able to arrange music exactly the way he wanted it.

Introducing Coiza Boa

Now, having been on the circuit for a few years, with several albums under his belt, and having steadily built up a band of loyal followers, Quetzal is boldly stepping out with his vibrant new album, 'Coiza Boa' – which translates roughly as 'Good Thing'.

This album, like his Brazilian roots, is lively and full of character and soul.

Drawing on the many influences and experiences of his lifetime, Quetzal takes the listener on a musical journey of his culture with a mix of sounds that includes Samba, Bossa Nova, Reggae, Jazz and Funk. He produces a cocktail of music that gets you drunk on its vibe.

One thing that you will notice about this album is the lack of heavy bass lines and underlying rhythms that so many songs are made up with nowadays. Quetzal's sound is stripped back to basics, almost naked and acoustic, so that the ear hears percussion instruments, trumpets, drums, piano, vocals and, of course, the violin.

With songs written in both English and Portuguese, there is sure to be music on this album that appeals to all tastes. Moreoever, the songs can easily make the transition from studio to stage, still sounding just as fantastic.

Look out for tracks such as 'That Something', which has a little of an '80s Gloria Estefan vibe, mixed with funky Jamiroquai-like jazz. 'Samba du Cuale' is sung in Portuguese, while 'Living it Up' is a must for driving in the car with the soft-top down. 'Everything”' is a reggae-style cover version of a hit by Jehro and, of course, the album’s title track 'Coiza Boa' is one you can’t help but shake your hips to.

If you’re looking for a fresh new artist, then Quetzal Guerrero is one to look out for. His albums can be found on Itunes or at Amazon.
